Critical Reading, Thinking and Writing

• Use writing and reading for inquiry, learning, thinking, and communicating
• Understand a writing assignment as a series of tasks, including finding, evaluating, analyzing, and synthesizing appropriate primary and secondary sources
• Integrate their own ideas with those of others
• Understand the relationships among language, knowledge, and power

This means whenever you are writing you must change your tone for every form of writing and share all sorts of ideas amongst different websites or where ever you received your information. Writing assignments are almost like science projects with everything you have to use to collect information. While I wrote my Letter to the Editor, I had to collect information from several websites and decide which factual information to use in my letter so I could get my point across as well as set the tone so my audience would know that I take drunken driving on Halloween night very seriously. People wake up every day and use critical reading, thinking and writing in everything they do.

"Halloween is supposed to be filled with fun and candy instead it can be a deadly night for pedestrians. On Halloween night, 48% of deadly car accidents involve a drunken driver and only 31% on an average day in the same year. Also, 23% of pedestrian fatalities include a drunken driver on Halloween night too. Parents and children shouldn't have to go out and worry about their safety on a night supposed to be filled with fun."

Gathering the information for this letter was a little emotional since I am a parent and couldn't imagine letting my daughter go out for a fun night then never possible coming back due to inexcusable negligence. If police and City administrators don't do anything soon then parents should get together to come up with something safer for our future to enjoy the night. Audiences can relate to my tone and can relate to what I'm saying in this letter so this attracts numerous people. I found a lot of information regarding accidents on Halloween night which was very helpful during my inquiry for it. I analyzed and evaluated how and what to say while writing my letter out as a draft so I could catch more attention since it means a lot to me. The WPA learning outcome has definitely taught me a lot but I definitely need more knowledge on it and how to interpret it better. I understand it and can use most of it but when it comes to defining it in my own way it can be somewhat tough because it’s already summed up perfectly. I'm always afraid of plagiarism because you read something and sometimes when you have to explain it in writing you forget where it came from or how it was written so you can accidentally plagiarize something.
