Knowledge of Conventions

• Learn common formats for different kinds of texts

• Develop knowledge of genre conventions ranging from structure and paragraphing to tone and mechanics

• Practice appropriate means of documenting their work

• Control such surface features as syntax, grammar, punctuation, and spelling

     During Composition I, I have learned so much through the WPA standards especially learning how to structure and use good mechanics. In my opinion what knowledge of conventions means is when you are texting a friend and asking if they want to go for pizza you don't always use correct grammar but when you are writing any type of paper you must always create it with the best intentions of using good structure and good grammar. I've learned how to correctly structure a paper as well as how to correctly place my commas this year. I enjoyed writing different genres this year but this letter to the editor was by far my favorite paper to write. I also felt my tone would be very strong willed since my letter was arguing for something I feel so strongly about.

 
                                                  Drunken Driving

 Halloween is supposed to be filled with fun and candy. Instead, it can be a deadly night for pedestrians. “48% of deadly car accidents involve a drunken driver and only 31% in an average day on Halloween night.  Also, 23% of pedestrian fatalities on Halloween night include a drunk driver. Parents and children shouldn't have to go out and worry about their safety on a night supposed to be filled with fun. Cities  and states should set up DUI checkpoints like they do around Christmas and New Year’s,  or taxi cab services could setup free rides on this holiday knowing people are out drinking. Cities can also inspect lights in neighborhoods or busy streets to ensure plenty of lighting for people to walk around and be seen. In California, 3 young teenagers lost their lives due to a drunken driver hitting them while they were enjoying their night trick or treating on October 31. 2014. Safety should be very important to cities during any holiday especially when they are walking around neighborhoods enjoying a fun tradition like many of us have enjoyed for many years. I hope more states will look into the safety they should provide for their communities. The risks of drunken driving fatalities will continue to increase each year unless our states provide us with the safety we deserve on a fun-filled night like Halloween.

     In my letter, I stand for what is right and I've set my tone for that as well. I also checked my grammar and mechanics for any mistakes. My syntax were placed together very well and by doing that it brought a good structure. Knowledge of conventions is making sure you have perfect structure with correct grammar and correct paragraphing. This is the more detailed part of writing a paper.
